Abstract

The Great Silk Road was one of the most important trade and cultural networks connecting East and West throughout ancient and medieval history. The territory of present-day Turkmenistan occupied an important position along several routes of this vast network. Ancient cities such as Merv, Nisa, Margiana and Kunya-Urgench developed as major centers of trade, crafts, science and culture. Through these cities, merchants, travelers and scholars exchanged goods, knowledge, technologies and cultural traditions. The Silk Road contributed significantly to the economic development of settlements in the region and encouraged the growth of urban centers, crafts and agriculture. It also facilitated cultural interaction among different civilizations, influencing architecture, art, science and intellectual life. This article examines the historical importance of the Great Silk Road in the development of the territory of modern Turkmenistan and emphasizes its role as a bridge between different civilizations and cultures.
