Abstract

Biodiversity—the variety of genes, species, and ecosystems—supports the natural processes on which human societies depend. Pollination, fertile soils, clean water, climate regulation, and many sources of food and medicine are connected to healthy ecosystems. Yet habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change are placing growing pressure on wildlife and natural environments. This article explains why biodiversity matters and outlines approaches to conservation, from protected areas and habitat restoration to sustainable resource use and community participation.
